Uke Can Do It!

Yarram Primary Ukelele Program

Yarram Primary School has launched a new music program for students based on the ukulele.  Under the guidance of PLC Leader, STEM and Performing Arts (3-6) Teacher Brad Kimber, the years 3 to 6 children have the opportunity to enjoy, play and develop music skills as part of the school curriculum.

Principal Karen Langdon said, ‘The new music program helps students express themselves better and it stimulates their perceptive capacities.  Playing the ukulele brings a lot of joy, happiness and movement, at the same time helps students develop emotionally. Playing and singing positively influences language skills and promotes relaxation.’

After just a few weeks of learning, this week’s school assembly was treated to terrific renditions of Ho Hey, by the Lumineers accompanied by the budding musicians – in time and with multiple chord changes as well.

The school invited members of Yarram Rotary Club, who funded the purchase of 25 good quality ukuleles for the music program, to witness this first performance.  They were astounded by the success of the project in such short time and the obvious enjoyment and pride the children demonstrated in their presentation.   Graeme James, who heads up the Rotary BBQ team said, ‘It was terrific to see how engaged and excited the children were to play the ukes.  It makes us all feel proud to see our community BBQ fundraising put to such good use back into the Yarram community’.
