Finals: YYN upset Woodside

What a game!

WOODSIDE were first to hit the scoreboard, but then the tempo flipped and YYN dominated the second half of the first quarter and could have been further ahead if they had been more accurate.  Woodside 3  1 19  YYN 3 4 22

With the nerves gone the game tightened up.  Every side winning the centre clearance can score.

The football was fast and furious, and, in the heat, this game would be decided by the team that had a full bench.  Woodside won this quarter with four goals to YYN's three but still trailed by one point.  Woodside 7  5 47  YYN 7 6 48.

Spectators had strapped themselves in for a thrilling last half.  Expectations were Woodside would come out and take the game by the scruff of the neck, like they had done so often during the season, but YYN hung in.  Kicking with a slight breeze YYN were able to kick away to a two-goal advantage mid-way through the third only to see Woodside hit back and reduce the score to just six points at the final change Woodside 8 8 56 YYN 9 8 62.

The scene was set for a great last quarter, Woodside knew what had to be done, YYN had to hang on. They went goal for goal right down to the final siren. Woodside had five scoring opportunities, YYN four in that last quarter

Woodside into attack, the ball up for grabs, a contious free kick to YYN saw the ball out of the danger zone and YYN hold onto win by five points.

YYN celebrated, they had won their way into a second semi-final and a chance to take on TTU for a place in the grandfinal, while for Woodside if they hope to make their second grand final they have to take the long road – the first semi final next Sunday with  no second chances.

Woodside will take on Heyfield at Glengarry.

The last time these two team meet was in Round 11 Woodside dominated that game winning  by 25 points.

Reserves

Woodside came to play

Woodside Reserves stole the show at the Qualifying final with a clinical display of great team footy.  Unfortunately for Heyfield they could do nothing to stop the onslaught.

From the first bounce, Woodside attacked the footy. Alex Walpole was determined not to let anything pass him at halfback.

David McKean started slowly, with a few fumbles in the opening minutes, but had plenty of teammates ready to pick up the crumbs. Woodside kicked four quick goals to Heyfield’s one.  Woodside by 18 points at the first change.

Heyfield second quarter was their best, but it was still no match for the Woodside boys who were in the grove and relentless in defence.  Woodside looked comfortable as they headed to the changing rooms at the long break, but they knew they could not relax and that they still had another hour of hard work ahead of them.  Woodside by 33 points.

Five goals to two in the third had Woodside in the box seat for a place in the second semi, but they refused to take their foot off the pedal and sent a huge message to those teams above them that they are the real deal as they stormed home with a five-goal to nil final quarter and a 91 thrashing for a deflated Heyfield line up.

Woodside’s Edward Haynes, not mentioned in Woodside Best, worked hard all came and that hard work created many goaling opportunities for Woodside, especially in the second half.

Alex Walpole deserved his best on ground award, he worked hard across half-back for the four quarters, his run and carry a highlight of the game.

David McKean, added another 7 goals to his home and away goal kicking tally of 66 to bring his season tally so far to 73 – does he have ambitions of kicking the ton?  If he continues with his form that is not out of reach with two (hopefully three) still in play.
